Koolskools had a terrific couple of days visiting Primary schools in Pembrokeshire in the run-up to Fairtrade Fortnight in February. We joined forces for the first time with Abby Dickinson and Elen Jones from the Future Generation’s Commissioner for Wales’s Office (FGCW) – both leading by example by wearing Koolskools Fairtrade cotton T-shirts!!
During a packed two-day programme we visited Neyland, Hook, Fenton, St Aidan’s and Hafan y Mor Primary schools.
Teachers and Students at Ysgol Hafan y Mor, Tenby, were excited to learn that their new Fairtrade school uniform also contains recycled polyester.
This was a visit with a difference in that Abby at FGCW had her video camera with her, and you can watch the amazing video footage of the visit here.
As you can see it was not only great fun but also, as can be clearly seen from the inspiring answers and comments that the students gave on camera, it was a really stimulating educational experience for all concerned. As those amazing answers show, it never ceases to amaze us how students of all ages really “get” Fairtrade and the concept of fair – as against exploitative – business.
The FGCW’s mantra, “Acting Today for a Better Tomorrow”, really chimes with the Fairtrade movement’s goals. Wales’s “Well-being of Future generations Act” requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other, and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change.
The act is unique to Wales and is attracting interest from countries across the world as it offers a huge opportunity to make a long-lasting, positive change to current and future generations.
In that overall spirit we were delighted that two of the schools visited – Neyland and Hafan y Mor – have already embraced Koolskools Fairtrade uniform, and St Aidan’s, Fenton and Hook are actively looking at it.
We cannot help but feel that this is NOT our last visit to Pembrokeshire schools!
